Would you like to know whats your IP address?

An IP address also known as Internet Protocol address is a unique row of numbers that some electronic devices use to identify and communicate with each other on a computer network utilizing a network connection.

Ip address usage

A network can contain more devices like: computers, modems, fax machines, phones, scanners, printers, access points, routers, wireless stuff. To communicate between them all these components they need a “serial number” – in our case IP addresses. Some IP addresses are intended to be unique within the scope of the global Internet, while others need to be unique only within the scope of an enterprise.

As we know the Internet is provided by Internet Service Providers. These ISPs can give us access to their network assigning a static or a dynamic IP address (Dynamic IP Addresses are most frequently assigned on LANs and broadband networks by Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) servers). These days, all major Internet Service Providers generates dynamic IP addresses.

If I’d like to know whats my ip I can use a service like the one provided by whatismyipaddress.com. Their IP Lookup service is one of the best I ever tried. Very precise. I’ve done some queries. It’s great because their tool now detects many proxy servers. IP addresses consist of four numbers separated by periods (also called a ‘dotted-quad’) and look something like 78.96.95.209.

The website I mentioned also can give you answers to these questions:

  • How do I change my IP address?
  • How do I hide my IP address?
  • Is my IP address blacklisted?
  • Can someone find out who I am by my IP?
  • I’ve been banned, what do I do?

How it works?

The ip address has a close connection with the MAC number of our network card. An easy way to change you IP address (dynamic) is to change your network card or to use a software that can do the trick. :) You can play around a bit… :)

IP addresses are managed and created by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority. The IANA generally allocates blocks to Regional Internet Registries, who in turn allocate smaller blocks to Internet service providers and enterprises.

C Class

So, every computer has it’s own IP address. There isn’t two computers using the same IP address, excepting a shared Internet connection (a router can do the trick, for example).

The Ip address can be changed using proxies, Virtual Private Network connections, tunnels and other options. In these cases we use the Internet connection of another computer.

Each web hosting account will have one or more IP addresses. Usually dedicated servers comes with more then one IP address because on a dedicated server you can host more then one website and if you are a SEO freak, you’ll want to host each website on different IP addresses (I’d recommend to use different IPs from different C classes)

It’s quite easy to understand!
